Once again the hall was packed with members and guests for our evening with Anne Berry from Wine Educators, talking about the tricky subject of "Terroir". We began with an Anjou Blanc, light and with a sweetish taste. A lovely wine to begin, from the Loire Valley with its predominately limestone soils. An Aligoté followed, once again typical of its region but with a quite contrasting style. The next white was a Macon Blanc, with a beautiful fragrance and aroma, light but perfect for a summer lunch! Our last white was a Pinot Gris with a glorious colour and rounded on the mouth. A perfect end to the whites and illustrating the many varied terroirs that can be found even in a fairly small geographical area.
King's Farm Shop provided once again a great bbq with chicken, steaks and sausages aplenty, and of course accompanied with great salads and finished off with strawberries and cream. Mmmmmm!
Back to the serious business of terroir with some reds, beginning with a typically light Cote de Nuits Villages, then followed with a stonking 15 percent Gigondas - the difference could not have been more marked, and yet they were grown in relatively close proximity, well, in South Eastern France anyway.... Following this we moved back to the Loire with a Bourgeuil Vielles Vignes, then ended with a Chateau Braude Haut Medoc 2002, a great end to the evening. We would like to thank Anne Berry for her excellent presentation and we would welcome her back again in the future.
