Welcome To The Aston Wine Club!

"At the dawn of civilisation, man discovered that the fermented juice of grapes exhilarated him as never before, and the magic vine was cherished above all others, and symbolised"

The Aston Wine Club is a thriving club for wine lovers in Aston Clinton, near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and the surrounding area.

The original aims of the club, drawn up in 1996, stated that "We should offer a group of friends the chance to meet various wine enthusiasts and hopefully broaden our knowledge of wines, but above all to enjoy ourselves"

This is just as appropriate today. We meet monthly (except August) in the Buckland Village Hall on a Friday evening. We also enjoy a 10% discount on wines at Majestic, Aylesbury!

All new members are very welcome, as long as you enjoy a drop of wine! Please contact us by e-mail, telephone, or come along to the next meeting!

Report of Member's Evening, 13th June 2008

A packed hall greeted our brave and intrepid speakers, drawn from the membership and committee of our illustrious club. We enjoyed a great variety of wines; the one thing drawing them together being the enthusiasm and passion of the presenters. Peter Ryder bravely began proceedings, tempting us with a touch of German Riesling, a sweetish aperitif which was perfect for whetting our whistles. Sandra Lawes followed with a Chardonnay from the Casablanca Valley in Chile, an example of how this grape can adapt to varying locations.  It was an excellent example of its type, as was Damian Slevin's New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, a young wine and perfect for summer drinking. We ended the whites with Wayne's quirky  (I mean that in a nice way!) presentation of another Sauvignon Blanc, this time from its home territory, and from his ex-colleague's vineyard in South West France. Another nice white to end our first half.

The break saw a multiplicity of pizzas and quiches, brought to us by Patchanee Slevin and Eve Mandry, with a little help from their other halves...luckily there was enough to feed the great numbers of attendees. Thanks to them for that.

The ubiquitous Bill George began our second half with a very pleasant red from, where else, Germany, that would not have been out of place in a line up of some of Europe's top wines. Nigel then once again regaled us with an Israeli wine that also was beyond expectations, a very accomplished example of how wines can be grown in hotter parts of the world. The evening then took a bit of a downturn when your esteemed president, sorry chairman, forced us to taste the Primark equivalent of the evening, a Madiran from the Pyrenees, which did though redeem itself in its healing qualities, seemingly somewhat akin to a Victorian elixir. Quite rightly, Fran Pears ended this evening of delights on an upturn with a wonderful Primitivo from the very south of Italy, bringing a very successful and enjoyable member's evening to a fitting close.

Our raffle raised £158 - a goodly sum, and thanks to all once again for your support.

NEXT MEETING - FRIDAY 18th JULY

Ann Berry from The Heart of England School of Wine talks about the importance of TERROIR in winemaking, and we will taste samples to illustrate this from some of France's small, caring and passionate producers.

An informative and educational evening evening in store, with the additional culinary bonus of a barbecue from Kings Farm, the famous Wendover butcher!

Wine Club Summer Outing to Chilford Hall Winery, Cambridgeshire, Saturday 16th August 2008

Your committee, not wishing to be seen to be sitting on their laurels, have taken it upon themselves to organise a delightful charabanc outing to an award-winning Cambridgeshire winery on August 16th this year. The coach will leave Aston Clinton at 9am, and our winery tour is booked for 11.30, taking about 1-1/2 hours, finishing in time for lunch at their restaurant and leaving the afternoon free for indulging in some of the other activities available, before our return journey at 5pm.  For more information on the destination, please consult their website at www.chilfordhall.co.uk . The cost will be £25 per head, including entry, tour and tutored tasting (this may reduce depending on the numbers…).  There is also talk about a couple of cases of wine being available on the coach to whet our whistles on the outward and return journeys. Please let me know by return if possible your intentions, and how many in your party, in order that we may organise a chara of the correct capacity.
